CHARACTER SUMMARY
Xie Lian was born in the kingdom of Xianle to the King and Queen. He is the only son and thus the only heir to said kingdom and so, from a very young age, he busied himself with learning about Xianle and its people. This led to him having arguments with his father (Xie Lian was naive and thought that, even in a drought, Xianle could support all of its inhabitants). He also took it upon himself to Ascend (to Heaven and thus become a god) to further aid his people. If a king can’t see to the needs of his people, surely a god can - or so he rationalized.
He studied hard and aided many in distress (including a little boy who would one day grow into Hua Cheng), but it wasn’t until after he defeated a powerful demon on a bridge that he caught Heaven’s eye. At seventeen, he Ascended and became a martial god. However the timing was complicated because Xianle was soon plagued by drought, famine and war (since his father refused to allow those suffering to enter the capital city). Xie Lian discovered that, as a god, he could not interfere with mortal matters and so he purposefully Fell from Heaven to aid his people. That’s when the plague made itself know. The Human-Face Disease. With its appearance, a disturbing figure made himself known too - White No-Face (a ghost with the rank of Calamity (the highest rank)). White No-Face haunted Xie Lian and made him feel and see how utterly weak he was in the face of Xianle’s downfall.
To make matters even harder, Xie Lian found himself trapped in a cave by flower demons that had a very unique way of luring their prey to them - they used sexual desire. Xie Lian breathed in their pollen before he realized what was happening and he was only able to just seal himself in a nearby cave. Completely overcome with desire, he had to instruct a young soldier on how to protect them - but he was much too embarrassed to let the young man see him, so he tried to stay in the shadows. Eventually his friends found them and cut down the flowers, but Xie Lian was shaken by how close he came to obliterating his vows of abstinence. (It was around this point that the young soldier (Hua Cheng) died and, feeling more helpless than ever, all Xie Lian could do was flee with his two friends and his parents.)
As they fled, staying in hovels (if they were lucky) and avoiding the angry mob that pursued them, Xie Lian and his friends did what they could to make money. Xie Lian even sold his sword - his last means of protection. Unknown to him, his father was ill with some sort of wasting disease and when he reached his last days, Xie Lian’s mother chose to follow him to the grave. The pair hung themselves with a silk rope while Xie Lian was out. Before they did so, Xie Lian’s friends deserted him. Thus he made the gruesome discovery alone and he tried to follow them by tying the silk rope around his neck too. But it unraveled and made him fall to the floor. Because of his godly blood - which was smeared on the rope - it became infused with a young soul. Xie Lian named the rope Ruoye and he has been his faithful companion ever since.
Broken, alone and half-mad, White No-Face found him again and despite the pleas of a ghost-fire (Hua Cheng), Xie Lian entered a temple where White No-Face convinced a crowd to stab him a hundred times with the same sword (in order to save themselves from the Human Face Disease). In pieces, Xie Lian revived himself the next morning and took the sword, guided by White No-Face and decided to punish his enemies with the same plague that had been set on his people. A young ghost joined him in his mission, a ghost named Wuming, and at the crucial moment when Xie Lian released the plague, Wuming took the curse on himself because he knew Xie Lian regretted his actions. Once again, Hua Cheng was trying to save him.
For a second time, he Ascended to Heaven, but he immediately sought out the Emperor and they feigned a battle so Xie Lian could be kicked out again. He didn’t want to be a god. He saw no hope in Heaven and no hope on Earth. Placing himself in a hole with a sword driven into his chest, he waited for someone to show him an ounce of kindness. A farmer finally did and that is where Xie Lian’s hat came into the picture. He has kept it to remind himself that hope exists ever since.
Two kingdoms followed - one in the desert and one that was born from the enemies of Xianle. He was a general for the first, fighting battles until he grew weary of it and allowed himself to be trampled and for the second, he was a teacher. He schooled the young prince in the sword especially. However both kingdoms ended in tragedy and because he was found, by the prince, killing the king, he was stabbed and chained into a coffin for one hundred years. (He stabbed the king because said king was ready to ruin the prince's perception of equality and peace. Another war would have surely been started if he hadn't acted.)
When he finally decided to join the world again, he Ascended for a third time and promptly damaged a good portion of Heaven on accident. Thus with a debt in place, he built a shrine in Puqi village and took on cases that were given to him by the Emperor. One case took him back to the desert where he learned what became of Banyue Pass. Another case took him to his cousin, Qi Rong. Both cases left him with immense regret, but with San Lang’s (Hua Cheng’s) comfort, he found ways to begin making amends. For example, he was keeping a ghost girl from Banyue (Ban Yue) who was quite attached to him when he was a general.
The Mid-Autumn festival was a big deal in Heaven and so he attended the banquet with the other deities. He didn’t expect to win the lantern competition (why would he with one shrine?), but when his turn arrived, the sky was filled with lanterns for him. He won the competition by a wide margin and he was certain he knew who he should thank (Hua Cheng), though he didn’t know why the ghost went to such great lengths for him.
