EVENT PLOTTING - Event #18: Dive Into the Dark
Dive Into the Dark

The Mecha Suit Hangar is once again ready to start testing their Flow Experiment Mechas. This time all systems have been checked multiple times for malfunctions and the possibility of sabotage is zero. They are proud to invite all otherworlders interested in the the experiment to run tests that will this time take them past the barriers and into the Darkness.
No one will be physically entering the Darkness, as the mecha suits will be remote controlled from the hangar through pods that are connected to them with strong signals boosted with magic. They warn that while they can afford to be reckless while fighting, they might still feel some of the damage the mecha suits suffer due to the close link. It's also why no one will operate the suits alone.
The mecha suit tests will be done in pairs, so first people need to find suitable pairs for themselves. The Research Center has provided a set of tests to help with this task.
The tests will comprise of any two (or all) of the following procedures, depending on what is required of each pair and a successful Rise rating. A "Rise" is the "right" connection between pair (or if you're feeling particularly in harmony, up to four people, but at the moment it's only two). This will be determined through the following methods:
Melodious Harmony: The pair will be asked to dance together and fall into rhythm. While this is obviously not going to go right immediately, the pair is expected to fall into step, predict the other’s movements, and match them and the dance beats. Three different kinds of melodies will be used (probably beats and melodies familiar to either partner) and the pair is expected to complete three successful dances together to achieve a perfect Rise. The pair can choose to sing as well, or do both together!
Feel the Fall: The pair is asked to spar with one another, and to find a rhythm in combat. They shall be required to make three hits on each other, and rather than bring their opponent down, they are required to continue the spar until all three hits are made by both sides— which require a touch on their bodies. The sparring will be done either barehanded or with practice weapons. A successful Rise will be determined by how well each fighter completes the spar.
With One Another: The pair will be asked to solve an escape room puzzle together, and be given thirty minutes to complete it. This will require cooperation between the pair and a successful Rise will be determined by how well the pair completes the escape room. It shall be unsuccessful if only one partner carries the entire session.
Once the desired Rise rating has been achieved, the researchers will guide the pairs to the next area.
It's time to start the experiments. Characters are directed to the mecha suit hangar and given suits to wear that would help them control the mecha suits. No one enters the mecha suits - at least not these types. They are instead controlled from the outside by groups with high Rise rating. This would ensure a safe exploration of the Darkness.
There are options to be in separate pods from one another, connected by a link cable, or in the same larger control pod where they both have enough room to move around. The first option is good for those who need absolute concentration on what they are doing; the flow state will help them move in sync even without being in the same space.
With a harmonious Rise rating established, the pair will be able to achieve a "Flow"— a process to evenly bear the mental strain of the piloting such large machines.
A successful Flow can be between four people with a harmonious Rise, but is strongest between two because of the even load between them.
During the state of Flow, the pilots are required to allow themselves to enter each other’s minds, acting as parts of the active brain.
They must avoid getting entangled in each other’s memories and "flow" their thoughts into place to function as one unit.
Once a successful Flow is achieved, pilots will be able to act physically as one entity, commanding either side of the unit and being able to make joint decisions on controlling the units easily without disruption to each other!
Some new pilots may end up chasing memories anyway (In a process called "Breaking the Flow"), and enter a memory as an unseen entity viewing it. This can happen either by the one providing the source memory "the dreamer" or the person witnessing the memory "the watcher" as a result of it.
Some have reported becoming an active part of the memory, usually those with a very high Rise rating, and the one whose memory has been entered has to realize that they're not in a real space to avoid causing damage to themselves and their partner.
The more the "dreamer" believes this is real, the more the "watcher" will be able to feel what's happening, which can cause disorientation for the pilots and malfunctions in the units.
The external failsafe in this situation if none of the pilots can break out of the memory is to force unconsciousness but this will render the pilots Rise rating to go down to zero and they will be unable to pilot for three days as their minds adjust to being their own memories again.
A Flow Resonance is the remaining resonance of being in another person’s memories, regardless of whether they are in the state of Flow or not. It's a harmless state, but it can lead to moments of finishing each other’s sentences or sensing what the other is feeling/thinking without them needing to voice it.
Most resonance fades within 24 hours, but the more Flow is achieved, the longer resonance can remain until it's just a natural part of the other. If this becomes a bother to the partners, there are Suppressants that help them disconnect, but this will also lower their Rise rating and require them to test for them again.
Once the pair is settled and comfortable, it's time to launch the mecha suit and head to the area of their research... at least that's how it's supposed to be going.
Unfortunately for everyone, a certain technician was assigned to help with the most simple of tasks: connecting the separated pods into right pairs. Barnabus (the brother of a certain chaos making mage) is mostly successful in all of this, but sometimes he mixes wrong pairs with each other. Someone didn't read the labels and just went with his gut.
Normally this would be an easy fix. The pairings would definitely be able to sense the difference in the rising once the experiment begins and can cancel it. However one of the pairs happens to be a certain Eldian duo, of which one of them previously started a small event. Their connection combined with the Flow Experiment sends almost everyone into the blue desert once more - even those not participating in the experiment. Thanks Barnabus.
Anyone can find themselves in The Paths, a place out of time covered in white sand. Somewhere in the distance is what looks like a tree of light. No matter how much you walk, you won't reach it, it's always just in the distance/stretching into the sky.
Here memories work just like they would during the breaking flow, but they're not limited to the partners. Anyone can stumble into another persons memories even without intending to, as long as they're close enough to each other or walk through the paths to find them. These memories can be either watched or experienced as a part of the memory.
The memories can also be from the character's future or they can be something they might have completely forgotten about. In a way this is a way to get a soft canon update! Yay...?
Maybe this is a harmless thing and Barnabus isn't going to suffer too greatly after...
During the start of the experiment, a third Eldian - related closely with one of the previously mentioned one - wandered close to the barrier near the Darkness. Why? We just don't know. What we do know is that this creates yet another problem for those mixed up with the Paths.
Due to his close proximity to the barrier, dark energy from the Darkness starts seeping into the Paths. This time the usual affect on body is least of anyone's concerns, as the effects of this are completely on the mental side. Anyone who touches the dark energy directly will find their thoughts directly twisted into something unimaginable and are filled with dark desires. Some may even turn to their partner or the closest person to them with murder in mind.
Even the memories are affected by the dark energy and are twisted into nightmare version. They can still remain very realistic or everything can be turned into unnatural and twisted things.
Fortunately, this time the Paths only lasts for around an hour in real life - just enough time for the NPCs to manage to cancel the connection between the two wrong pods. This means nothing for how long it actually feels like since Paths operate outside time. One hour could very well feel like a week.
A break is called to let anyone affected take a breather and decide if they want to continue. Smaller dragons are also called in to help those who got their mind corrupted by the dark energy.
Barnabus, meanwhile, is hauled into detention. His fate is to be decided later.
The experiment can begin. Pairs are asked to enter their control pods so the launches can begin. The place chosen for the experiment is on the border of the Spring and Summer Segments. The barrier there has been slightly weakened to let the mecha suits pass through it with ease. Thanks to being able to fly at extreme speeds the journey from the city to the barrier edge doesn't take more than a few hours, during which everyone can practice controlling the mecha suits in the air.
The mecha suits themselves are giant humanoid robots. They are protected against corruption from dark energy - a technique that is still unsafe for people. Along with flight-capable wings they have energy cannons on the arms and laser blades on both legs and arms that can be both used as is or held in hands for fighting. Everyone is able to see everything like they'd be in the mecha suits themselves, making the experience feel very real.
While the experiment is going on anyone not participating in controlling the mecha suits is encouraged to camp close to the barrier to make sure stronger monsters stay out of the Segments. The barrier will still keep most of the creatures out, but there's always the risk of bigger breaches happening.
The camps are protected by barrier stones and have several Luxury Tents set up. They are set up between the Airship Station and The Temple of Death, but adventurers are welcome to camp elsewhere as well if they have the courage to do so.
As the mecha suits arrive in the Darkness they're greeted with a landscape that lacks color. Everything is black, gray or (very rarely) white. There are several ruins they can see right away in both of the Segments. Within those ruins there are monsters of different variety.
Negative Monsters - Monsters that usually appear as small goblin-like creatures who feast on positive energies after a failed item enhancement. These, however, are giant and buff and do actual damage, along with draining the mecha suit energy. It's also possible for them to drain positive energy from the pilots through the mecha suit connection.
Chimera Salad - What happens when various vegetable - and fruit monsters fuse together? You get monstrous Chimera Salads. These monstrous salads have various different kind of acid juices and sticky essences that either damage the mecha suit or make it more difficult to move. Submerging the mecha suit into one of the bodies of water will make the fluids wash off.
Monster Waterlilies - In the waters of the Darkness there are giant quite normal looking waterlilies. Stepping on one is like stepping onto a bear trap, as it snaps around the mecha suits leg and tries to drag it under the water to try and tear it apart with its jaws.
Sentient Monster Ruins - Investigating the ruins may awaken a monster that is the whole ruins. The Sentient Monster Ruins are the 'upgraded' versions of the previous monster houses and use every structure in their ruins to fight against the mecha suits. Any parts that fall to it will be used like a part of the ruins. Their aim is to add to their size by absorbing other things.
The mecha suits are slower in the Darkness due to the corruption defense system taking more of the power, but it's still surprisingly nimble and easy to operate with the right rising rating. The monsters can be damaged well with the blades and cannons of the suit, even if it might take a while to properly kill them.
One of the goals is to collect different kinds of samples from the Darkness. This includes any plants, rocks and even building parts. Since they're coated in dark energy they can be put into special capsules made for this specific purpose. They can be taken from the robots shoulder blades and work very similarly to Poke balls in that they can hold any size of an item and shrink to be easily portable.
Occasionally, characters will have to return the mecha suits to the Mecha Hangar to get the energies refilled and take a break themselves, but they can go on for several hours. This gives everyone an opportunity to switch partners if they so wish.
Those who dare to move further into the Darkness to investigate on a later date (20th) will encounter a black dome that's hard to see from far away. Above this very dome stands a middle-aged woman with long hair and some manner of technological mask over her eyes. She doesn't seem to be wearing any other kind of protective gear on her, but she seems to be doing just fine, somehow.
The woman is smiling as she spreads her arms, summoning a small group of Oblivisci. It's hard to hear her voice due to the distance, but anyone who knows how to read lips can understand what she's saying ("Go on my Oblivisci. Punish these ignorant fools") before she disappears into the dark dome that then vanishes. The Oblivisci start their journey towards the weakened barrier.
Oblivisci are a formerly discarded creation of the Scientist, later retrieved and replicated when she found it to be of use. Twisted by the Darkness for so long it is impossible to tell what it originally looked like - a strangely proportioned beast, elongated and stretched in ways that defy logic and give a sense of the uncanny, looking at it directly makes examining it a difficult task. Each one is different yet with the same unsettling presence, making it difficult to focus on for too long.
The Oblivisci are vicious and voracious, intent upon consuming anything not already tainted by the Darkness. Its unique 'ability' is to cause living things that it consumes to be utterly forgotten by anyone that knew of them. However, this ability is not flawless, and is particularly prone to being seen through when people are involved. In these cases the memories and connections are not gone, merely lost, and can be recalled through application of touch magic and the emotions associated with Seasonal abilities.
Samples needed to wait for a while. Now the main priority is to stop the [False Hydra] from entering the Segments by destroying them.
By the end of the month all of the experiments have been concluded and the necessary samples have been collected. Next time the mecha suits are used it will a mission longer and even more meaningful, with the information they have now gathered.
Just like after many other successful missions, parties with all kinds of music (with cautious singing after the new years event) and free food is being held for all otherworlders. They're also given a pay of 100,000 Moon Coins for participating in the experiment or in defending the Segments, as well as gift cards for spas and luxury airship rides. The overall mood in Nightwake is extremely positive.

• While the mecha suits are remote controlled, there's still a possibility to get injured. Getting the mecha suits whole arm ripped off - for example - will surely hurt whoever is controlling that arm - it's even possible to have a completely numb arm for a while or even dislocated until healed.
• The mecha suits are controlled with the person's whole body and a simple controller that the suit they wear provides.
• Herakles will confirm later on that the woman people saw in the Darkness is called The Scientist, whose primary ability is to create monster fusions.
• Barnabus will be demoted to someone who cleans the toilets and is not allowed to touch any technology until he's tested he's ready for it again.
• Smut is not allowed on the event post, so if your thread is heading that way, please move it to a separate entry (like to your musebox or characters' journal).
• Remember to content and spoiler warn as necessary!
• Any similarities to certain blockbuster movies and series starting with P and ending in Rim are very intentional.

So, hi! I'm here for the traumatized girl to share memories and freak out and panic and it's gonna be Real Bad For Her because she has a fuckton of awful memories that I'd love to get out to light. Her main canon memories deal with a lot of supernatural human experimentation which explains the above. . . aaaand then there's the CRAU memories.
Which also have a lot of content warnings, which includes: meta/fourth walling horror, unreality, dehumanization and all that entails, possession, suicidal ideation, murder/murder games, human experimentation, mental manipulation and abuse.
Of course, I'm down to share somewhat lighter (???) memories with people, just let me know how dark or not so dark you'd want to go for.

Rising Again - he will of course be taking part in this! While he'll be partnered with Farlan for most of it, he's a
workaholicsturdy little guy so there will most likely be chances for him to take up a few shifts with someone else, too. He's a professional (TM) so much like the boss guy in the PacRim movie, he's able to achieve Flow with most people regardless of personal preferences or differences. This does mean that he's extremely unlikely to break flow unless something extremely triggering to him personally happens, but if your character would be able to cause it, that's more than fine with me!On the Paths of Time - OH BOY oh dear Levi is going to LOSE HIS SHIT. (In a calm manner. Like saying "I must go", getting up and leaving tO FIND THE PERSON HE APPARENTLY NEEDS TO KICK, again.) At least he should be understanding once someone actually explains how this happened but his initial reaction is going to be very kneejerk.
I'm honestly not big on memshare but if anyone is interested, let me know! You could get fun tidbits of titans eating people, Levi slaying titans, some emotional or sad moments, baby Levi drinking tea with his mom or ripping bandits' faces off, training with Kenny, stabbing Zeke, and of course there's always The Rumbling that's basically a cataclysmic event which includes a landmass of titans trampling everything in their way.
I'm also not necessarily set on doing anything with the Darkness corruption and Levi would know better than to touch it himself (ofc he could still get launched at it while protecting someone etc), but again if there's something you'd be interested in doing with that we could make it work.
Hello Darkness My Old Enemy - not much to say here, he's all for fighting monsters and collecting samples, and will likely want to try to investigate that disappearing dome (did it actually disappear or just turn invisible)?
Considering the event goes for the whole month, he'll also likely take up the guard duty on the ground at some points to vary it up a bit (or if it sounds like they need more people) and fight some monsters the old fashioned way. He is very, very good at combat. Let me know if you'd like to join him!

Rising Again - he'll be pairing up with Gintoki for this. While he wouldn't be opposed to people learning his secrets for the most part, he was also witness to Gintoki's Worst Day and he doesn't want to risk airing it out to anyone without his consent. There's always the possibility of misaligned pods though...
On the Paths of Time - he will mostly be very confused. If anybody would like to stumble into a memory of his, let me know and we can discuss what would be most interesting! Some possible options are:
- him at his parents' grave with his grandmother
- him living alone as a kid
- meeting Gintoki for the first time
- Gintoki giving him his nickname ("Zura")
- various WAR scenes with both humans and Amanto (gore, blood, death, all the usual apply)
- various war camp and negotiations scenes that can range from lighthearted (him separating his fighting friends) to serious (him giving orders as a general) to hurtful (enemies and/or allies talking behind his back about him being a coward)
- the worst day of his life BUT due to personal differences and also as to not overlap with Gintoki's, this would be more the aftermath of said day where [REDACTED] (that you can experience in Gintoki's memory) has already happened. welcome to the fallout!
Hello Darkness My Old Enemy - he'll be cautious and probably focus more on collecting samples, but will fight when necessary and be curious about the Evil Woman showing up.
As there's likely only one person he's getting into a mecha with, he will also likely be part of the forces on the ground! That would in fact play into his strengths from his war experience -- hold the line, retreat when necessary, regroup and push back. So if anyone would like to help him beat back some monsters, hit me up! He can use some Autumn powers by now, though not a lot, and he also has explosives and sword.

As someone who hails from a kingdom of technology, Golden Cheese is very HELL YEAH about the mech suits. SHE DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT IT MIGHT NOT FIT HER, SHE WILL MAKE IT FIT. YOU CANNOT DENY THE GOLDEN GODDESS. So I'm up for any dancing/puzzle solving shenanigans, fighting is likely because she tiny. (though she is miffed that people wouldn't take her seriously for a fight. SHE COULD KICK YOUR ASSES IF SHE WAS JUST A FEW INCHES BIGGER.)

Mechaaaaaaaa!! Kinda going into later series spoilers but /gestures at how awesome All Might's suit is in canon. Heck yes. I'm here for Not!Pacific Rim times!!
Izuku here will be willing to try and help. So, there's some fun potential memory sharing options I guess. I've taken him from when the class drag him back to the dorms so anything prior to that is possible, but I'm thinking something along the lines of having a mixture of happier and possibly darker memories for people to choose from?? Like, at least one of him as a bitty. Either bitty Izuku offering to help Bakugo up or like. The moments with his mum where she puts on the All Might video yet again for him or when she's playing with him and he's all dressed up because. Too damned cute....!! I was otherwise thinking of showing maybe his fight with Bakugo (shush, you know exactly which one I mean!!) or when he first gets told that he can be a hero, too. That All Might would choose him to give his Quirk to. Maybe the fight with Muscular? I def want him saving Eri because that is just. Iconic and he misses her so much. Prob the scene with his classmates trying to bring him back. Just so everyone can be like jfc this child how is he even actually still alive he is the most reckless shounen protag and has like negative sense of self preservation if that is even possible it is a miracle he is not more frakked up from all the injuries.
He might show up at the party. Which. He'll either be faking it till he makes it that he's Fine after /gestures at some of those memories. Or he'll be kinda awkwardly wallflowering or something.

Event Plans: Kantera will give it a shot controlling the mecha suits! It should be safe enough, so he'd like to help... Entering a Flow state with him will make him a little stressed on its own because (realness issues) but he should be able to handle it okay.
...He also has baggage about having killed someone he loves before and fears doing it again, so I definitely want him to be affected by the Darkness. I don't want him to actually kill anyone, but lashing out at people before getting a hold of himself and begging them to stay away = A+++.
As far as memories go, I will probably give people memories based on player request: I have horrible traumatic idol hell death memories, unreality memories, memories from 'the original Kantera', actually nice Seasons memories...

Event Plans: Considering his past he will be very hesitant to do the mecha piloting unless it's with a select few people, unfortunately.
However, I am here to make him suffer (always, apparently) so I'd be up for anyone wanting to have them bump into one another in the Paths and experience some memories. I'll put some options under a summary though because there are big CW/TW in here.
- Getting eaten by the demon in the hell portal in seasons (this is here because it's funny and humiliating)
- Winning his mother's necklace back from the enemy tribe for his sister who worries over him
- Soft memory of him, his sister and mother curled up to fight off the cold

- Memory of his mother's death, with the Katicans invading their camp and him and his sister having to play dead so they wouldn't be discovered. (This option comes with haunting shrill cackling)

- Being locked in a labyrinth with 34 other slaves, having to murder them to 'prove his worth'

Also!!! He saw The Scientist during the Liar's Mansion exploration so he will recognise her immediately with whoever he is doing the experiment with at the time and he is going to be so angry seeing her. She experimented on people and turned them to clocks/plants, Lucy has now been put to rest but jfc he wants to murder a bitch 🔪 it's going to be very frustrating she gets away tbh. When he's taking a break from the experiment he can shield people fighting out in the segments so will dip into that as well.

Event Plans: Sonia will actually volunteer to pilot the mecha, especially as she works in the research centre and would be happy to help. She'll also be happy to go out to help defend in the segments. She took the potion of newly imagined powers and have ghoul powers from Tokyo ghoul without the need to eat people, so her body is very durable now and she has inhuman strength/speed/stamina (and tentacle-like appendages ig)
I'm also down for her to get caught in the Paths and share memories with others, which is... a whole mix of stuff, I'll put DR spoilers/TW/CW under summaries so people don't have to view if they don't want.

Eren knows what happens in the mechs so he isn't open to a lot of that but TOO BAD, because somehow he's somewhat responsible for half this event! If you were here in December 2023, please feel free to remember that Eren was the reason for the Paths nonsense last time (if your character didn't participate, that's fine, we can hand wave that part).
But my event plans for him are all Paths stuff.
Luckily(?), Eren's memories are already bad enough without help, so he won't have extra nightmare memories. Just his regular flavour.

My tried and true, the basement conversation that Eren has with Reiner. This ends in a lot of people dying. But before that, this whole conversation is probably REAL WEIRD to witness considering Eren and Reiner are basically married in Ellipsa. (TW for violence, murder, gaslighting)
Eren announces the Rumbling which is a future memory for him but he already knows it happens and anyway I can do what I want! Nothing graphic in the video, but the implication is that he's going to kill pretty much everyone in the world, so this is probably a negative CR option. He won't defend this choice but he also will not apologise for it.

Event Plans: For finding potential partners, Phainon is best suited to the sparring or escape room options. If your character isn't much of a fighter, def pick the escape room option ;D
Open to sharing headspace things. Phainon has pretty high willpower and isn't as likely to fall into someone else's memories, but you never know, right? His own head is a complete mess of zillions of memories so uhhh just try not to chase those I guess!
For Paths memories, we have:

As a note, all of Phainon's memories can be filled with static confusion, like a computer glitching out, or corrupted data.
Mydei vs Flame Reaver. Phainon is there for this as Phainon, but Phainon is also the Flame Reaver so this could be experienced from either angle.
Speaking of Mydei, how about some conflict? Phainon vs Mydei from the past. Out of context, this will be confusing for others, but dw about it. HOWEVER, I wouldn't reveal Mydei's weakness so MYSTERIOUSLY that line is not present in the memory that others experience :')
Also speaking of Mydei, Phainon and Mydei having a contest over who can handle the hottest bath temperature.
Phainon meets Stelle and Dan Heng for the first time.
I couldn't find a good video for a nightmare, but honestly, just follow Phainon through a few awful cycles of Amphoreus and get eaten by the Black Tide or w/e. I'll figure out some prompt for y'all.
For the Darkness investigation, Phainon will help whenever and however he can, to the point of running himself ragged (which will probably be obvious to a partner since they're connected!). He will be there when The Scientist appears and will chase her but obviously he can't get to her. Sad for him.
If your character needs a rescue from some kind of monster, Phainon is ya boy and he'll come save you.

-Rinku is unfortunately still recovering from her coma and can't go out on the mission. She will be pining sadly over the sync tests and mecha operation.
-She will, however, be affected by the Paths! She'll get stuck in the sand with her walker and have a good variety of memories available, from silly fluff to denying loneliness to being embarrassed in public (thanks, Evangeline). Both canon and in-game memories will be open.
-Rinku's also not medically cleared to fight again, so she can't go camp out even in the reserve team. So she'll be at home taking care of the kids, trying to convince Mary it's okay that she will eventually return to going on quests and missions, and trying to convince herself that not going this time won't mean all her CR are going to get killed out there.
-But you know what's great for fighting trauma? Celebrating when everyone's come back, singing and dancing because the events of New Year's are not going to take her passion from her thank you very much, and playing around at the parties! And also wishing she'd gone, but.

I know, I know, but there's something to be said about fucking up the Rise tests. Struggling through escape rooms, terrible dancing, commiserating afterwards about how the person they were with accidentally broke the clue they were supposed to use to get out of the escape room which resulted in them being stuck for another 20 minutes.
In terms of memories, I can offer deeply traumatic memories or Sunday getting dragged by himself repeatedly (it makes sense in context) as he struggles. Or just getting hit by a train.
